Every guest asks the same thing on their first morning: what's the easiest way into the city? For midtown and Times Square, the answer is a bus that stops about a five-minute walk from our door, by the park: NJ Transit's 107. One seat, no changes, no stairs with a suitcase. You step off on 42nd Street.
The short version
- Where: Elizabeth Avenue by the park, on the side heading toward Weequahic Park, about a five-minute walk from us.
- Where it goes: a few quick stops, then express to the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in midtown.
- How long: 25 minutes or less on the bus. The trade-off is the five-minute walk to the stop.
- How often: roughly every half hour. Check the NJ Transit app for exact times.
- Pay with: the NJ Transit app, or tap a contactless card or phone on the bus.
Going in, step by step
1 · Walk to the stop: five minutes, and the neighbourhood on the way
The trade-off for the one-seat ride is a short walk. It's also the quickest tour of the neighbourhood you'll get:
- Turn right onto Elizabeth Avenue. You'll pass the local mechanic shop. It's where we take our own car, so if yours gives you any trouble while you're here, that's where we'd send you. The gas station is right across the street.
- Keep going. Another gas station, then Jersey Chicken, Burger King and White Castle, all in one spot. Good to know for a quick bite on the way home.
- Walk under the bridge and keep straight on Elizabeth Avenue.
- Weequahic Park appears on your left. The 107 stop is right by the park on Elizabeth Avenue, close to the corner.
On your first morning, ask us and we'll point you the right way.
2 · Pay
The simplest way is the NJ Transit app: buy a bus ticket to New York before the bus arrives and show it to the driver. You can also tap a contactless bank card or your phone on the reader as you board. Tell the driver you're going to New York, because the fare depends on distance. It's an interstate fare, so it costs more than a local bus. The app shows today's price.
3 · Ride
After our stop the bus makes a few quick stops along Meeker and Frelinghuysen Avenues and one at the airport's north cargo area, then takes the highway into Manhattan. Sit back. The view of the skyline on the way in is part of the trip.
4 · Arrive at Port Authority
You'll be at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Times Square is a short walk east. Bryant Park's holiday shops and the New York Public Library are a few blocks beyond that.
Coming back
Buy your ticket before you board at Port Authority. Tapping a card doesn't work when you get on there, so use the app or a ticket machine. Look for the 107 on the departure boards to find the gate. Ask for "the Irvington bus" if you can't find it, because that's where it ends.
Out late? Check the time of the last 107 in the app before your evening starts. If you miss it, NJ Transit trains run from New York Penn Station to Newark Penn (about twenty minutes), and a short Uber gets you home from there.
When to take something else
- Downtown (World Trade Center, SoHo, the Statue of Liberty ferries): take the local 39 bus to Newark Penn, then the PATH train. It's cheaper for downtown. See our getting-around page.
- 34th Street and Macy's: the NJ Transit train from Newark Penn to New York Penn lands you a couple of blocks away.
- The airport: the 107 does not go to the terminals. Take an Uber, about five minutes.
Holiday tip: on Thanksgiving and other holidays NJ Transit often runs a weekend or holiday schedule. For the parade, leave early and check the app the night before.
